Do you mean thier fitter tests?
If it is the fitting test then a couple of tips,
make sure you put 2 pins in each bit of gripper around the arcatraving,
tape all the underlay joins(even though they never supply you with tape),
make sure the pile directions are as they should be and basically that the job is left clean and tidy.
Silly little things is what they are trying to catch you out on,should be easy for you to get through, good luck.
oh and make sure any doorstrips are cut correctly and not at all short

Not heard that you cant? as long as you can use a hooked blade and dont damage the skirting I dont see a problem with it and I use a bolster for tucking, always have done.

I could be wrong but I think I heard somewhere that you have to use a tack hammer to fit gripper. Not sure where I heard that though.

Correct Allthegear, them FITA inspectors don't like claw hammers for grippering as any skirting strikes will cause damage - especially with the sh**** mdf skirts we get now. to the original poster, as Foxprod said, double nail even the smallest bits of gripper, mitre the gripper also. Use shears for the underlay and tape all underlay joins, if you have one use a cutter (like this one Sweeney Todd - Hi-Tech Trimmer )instead of your knife, the knife should be for roughing in only. Bars should fit to the mm, I've seen people pulled up for being 1mm short. Have a look out for a plastic Safety bolster, blunted brick bolsters or stair tools are also frowned upon. Obviously, once the inspection is over you can go back to fitting in your preferred manner , though I must admit to following some of thier advice ever since. Best of luck!

Have you used one of those hi tech trimmers mate? Are they good for some types and poor for others? I could see a few problems on a thick saxony. Oh and get a speed cat.

Hi Ian, to be honest, I used the trimmer (of that style) I had very sparingly, until I broke it! I found them a bit awkward to set up and better on vinyl or cheapy stick down felts than thicker (decent!) carpet. Other fitters I know swear by them so probably just need a little perserverence then they'd be useful. Reason I mentioned them is because the FITA inspectors sell them and plug them at every opportunity - when they see you have the tools they favour it's brownie points time!! I tend to use the crain deluxe trimmer, bit more of an old skool tool and no good for stick down but that's where the hook blade comes into force ;-)

I can never understand why an outfit as unproffesional as carpetright has the cheek to tell their fitters that they need to be assesed,,,As a former store manager i feel i have the right to say so,,they ought to test their estimaters and sales staff,,regional managers,,directors and buyers,,then they can asses the fitters when their own house is in order. It just realy annoys me ,,they are so blaze about being thew biggest in the country,,they forget that most of the independants are doing a far better job ,with happier and more qualified staff and fitters,,
