Default How long was your apprenticship?

How long was your apprenticship? Also how long was it before you felt confident to go it alone?

I think in total mine was about 3 years.I fitted my first carpet after about 3-4 months(foam back) and hessian backed I spose after about 6 months.
I went it alone after the 3 years, although I had never fitted a vinyl untill then.
I was lucky enough that my first contract on my own was 30 kitchens and 30 bathrooms in vinyl,so a tube of the white stuff helped me correct the first few I messed up a bit but by the end of the job I was pretty much an expert..........

I think being on site with an experienced fitter for that lengh of time was invaluable, not sure that these courses can replace hands on.......

Been fitting now 18 years or so,and still come accross some odd ones! You never stop learning I guess.

Cheers foxpod, I totally agree about the courses, although I havent been on one I just don't see how you can get to a totally competant level after just one or two weeks in a cubical. The guys I work for are really good for showing me the ropes, they always let me do a bit of fitting now on each job, just wanted to guage how long it takes most people. 18 years is a long time to do anything!

Two years aint t bad, some peoples apprentiships last for years, IMHO its unnesassarily long. I'm only part time at this but even I'm picking things up pretty quickly. I was told I could learn the in about 18 months. Not a bad amount of time to pick up a trade.

The fact that the guys you work with are showing you the ropes and giving you the chance to do a bit, suggests to me that you are showing willing, and attribute not found in many youngsters so keep it up. I,m an old timer with nearly twice the years of foxpod and still in the game with my son. My last apprentice went on his own late last year after 2 years with me, he hadn,t learnt everything (you never do) but he knows and does still call for help and advice when he is not sure of anything. Stick with it kid

Thanks for the encouragement mate, not sure about the youngster part though- i'm 27! They treat me well so its hard not to show willing. As everyone knows if you treat your staff well then they will/should return the favour.
